Design Highlights
Overview
Workout Companion is a personal fitness app I designed and built to support my own workouts. It turns my training plan into a live coaching surface: today’s session, exercise guidance, set logging, rest timing, readiness feedback, technique notes, and workout history are all available in a responsive interface that adapts from desktop planning to phone-in-gym use. Obsidian acts as the data source for workout knowledge and planning notes, while OpenClaw gives me a natural-language input path for interacting with the system.
Challenge
Most workout tracking tools are either too manual during training or too generic to feel personal. The moment that matters most is live: I need to know what to do next, log a set quickly, recover for the right amount of time, and maintain good technique without fighting the interface. I wanted software that reflected how I actually train, not a generic fitness workflow.
Approach
I designed the experience around the rhythm of a workout rather than around database screens. The core flow moves from today’s workout to an active exercise, then into a rest state, set completion, and session history. I used my own workout notes in Obsidian as source material, then built the app around realistic training states, responsive testing, and low-friction input through OpenClaw.
Solution
Built a responsive app with a dashboard for today’s workout, active exercise views, rest timer states, completion feedback, technique guidance, and history/trend screens. The interface uses large touch targets, glanceable workout progress, readiness indicators, and coach-like language so it works during a real training session. I also created a launch film from captured app screens to show how the companion works across desktop, tablet, and phone contexts.
Impact
The project gave me a workout tool tailored to my own routines while demonstrating an end-to-end personal software workflow: design the app, connect it to my knowledge/workout notes, build the responsive prototype, capture product screens, and produce a launch film from the same artifact. It shows how personal software can move beyond static tracking into contextual coaching.
Key Learnings
Workout software has to respect attention, fatigue, and environment. The best interface is not the one with the most data; it is the one that preserves momentum during the session. Obsidian is useful as a durable source of training context, and OpenClaw makes the system feel less like form-filling and more like a companion I can talk to.
