Employee Experience
Onboarding workflows achieving 90% mobile usage increase and 75% completion time reduction.
Design Highlights
Overview
Employee Experience modernized onboarding and self-service workflows for enterprise HR systems including PeopleSoft and other legacy people management platforms. Using InFlight's UI platform and design system, the project replaced desktop-only, confusing workflows with modern, mobile-responsive experiences that employees could actually complete without documentation.
Challenge
Legacy people management systems like PeopleSoft had no mobile experience and workflows so confusing that most employees could not complete basic tasks—onboarding, benefits enrollment, self-service updates—without extensive documentation or support. The desktop-only interfaces created bottlenecks in onboarding and ongoing HR processes, frustrating both employees and HR teams.
Approach
Applied InFlight's design system to create a consistent, mobile-first experience layer on top of legacy HR platforms. Focused on workflows employees could complete without documentation — the measure of success was a task finished on the first attempt, without help.
Solution
Built an employee portal covering onboarding, benefits enrollment, and self-service tools with a mobile-first responsive design. The InFlight design system provided consistent components and patterns across all implementations. Workflows were redesigned to be self-explanatory, eliminating the need for documentation. The mobile experience gave employees the flexibility to complete HR tasks from any device.
Impact
Achieved 90% mobile usage increase—effectively going from zero mobile capability to a fully responsive experience. Reduced workflow completion time by 75% by removing the need for documentation. Deployed to Fortune 500 clients including University of Arizona, Cox Automotive, Vail Resorts, and Citibank. Cut the HR support burden by enabling employee self-service.
Key Learnings
When legacy workflows are so confusing that users need documentation to complete basic tasks, the problem isn't documentation—it's the workflow. Redesigning for clarity and self-evidence is more effective than adding help text. Mobile-first design mattered most because people expect to handle HR tasks on their own time, from their own devices.
